TATA Kestrel - Modern Armoured Personnel Carrier

Today I will tell you guys about TATA's Modern Armoured Personnel Carrier - "KESTREL"


Kestrel is a Modern Armoured Personnel Carrier for Indian Army Developed and manufactured by Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) and TATA motors together. It's design is based on most of the western Armoured personnel carrier. The main reason/motive to develop this Armoured Personnel Carrier is to replace the old Russian era Armoured personnel carrier and BMPs.
(BMPs are the Russian versions of Infantry Fighting Vehicle) Currently Indian Army is operating soviet origins BMP-1, BMP-2 and variou types of Armoured Personnel Carrier. The main disadvantage of using this currently used Armoured personnel carrier is that it is incapable of taking challenge with modern armoured personnel carrier.

TATA Kestrel was first introduce in the year of 2014 in Defence expo. This armoured personnel carrier is designed on the basis of modern warfares and it also comes with very good survivability and mobility. If we talk about it's survivability it has protection against arm firings and also against concealed explosives.

Now let's come to it's specifications :-

General specifications :-
  • Weight - 25 Tonnes
  • Lenght - 7.80 m
  • Width - 2.95 m
  • Height - 2.28 m 
  • Engine used - 600 HP diesel engine
  • speed - 100 kmph on road and 10 kmph in water
  • Crew - 3 crew + 9 passengers
  • Armour used - Applique & Composites with welded steel
Main Armaments :-
  • 30 mm automatic cannon
  • Armour-piercing incendiary
  • High-explosive incendiary
  • Effective range is around 3000 m
Secondary Armaments :-
  • 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun
  • Equipped with 2 x anti-tank guided missile
Apart from this it can also be equipped with 12.7 mm heavy machine gun and a 40 mm automatic grenade launcher.

TATA kestrel is fully an amphibious armoured personnel carrier, which means that it can used in both land and water areas. TATA kestrel was commissioned in Indian Army in service in 2017. But how many TATA kestrel have been manufactured is not yet revealed. But according to some sources Indian army can replace the whole fleet of BMPs with 2000 TATA kestrel in upcoming  years.
