Difference Between Various Naval Ships

Today I will tell you guys about some different Naval Ships that are used by Indian Navy :-


Many people don't know that there are various ships used by Navy for different applications and here we will talk about various ships that are currently used by Indian Navy. So let's start without wasting any time.

Currently Indian Navy use three different types of ships which are : 
  • Frigates
  • Corvettes
  • Destroyer 

Frigates :-

Frigates are those ships which weighs more than 3000 tonnes. It's main role is to protect other ally ships from submarine. Frigates are very much similar to other ships like Corvettes, Destroyer & even Cruiser. Frigates are considered as Littoral combat ships, which means that Frigates are used as a combat ship in coastal areas or near shore of the sea.Frigates are the intermediate naval vessels between Corvettes and Destroyer. Frigates are generally small warships but with great manoeuvrability. India has some great stealth Frigates of Shivalik class or project 17 class which are originated in India only. Currently Indian Navy is operating 13 Frigates as of January 2018 reports.

Corvettes :-

Corvette ships are small warships with small arms capacity, corvettes ships comes with high manoeuvrability and are generally used or operate in small sea area. Corvettes ships are not so costly that's why it is used by almost all the country's Navy. Russia is the biggest operator of Corvette ships as of now. Kamorta class or project 28 class corvettes are Indian originated anti-submarine corvettes which are currently in service with the Indian Navy. Currently Indian Navy is operating 23 corvettes.

Destroyer :-

Destroyer ships are fast operating ships with high manoeuvrability and long endurance warfare ships.
Endurance means that it's bearing power is good. Destroyers are warships with long range warfare system which means Destroyers can easily destroy any ship even if it is not close to it. The main role of Destroyer ships is to protect the bigger ships from small or medium sized warships. The speciality of Destroyer ships is that, it has high firepower and long endurance that's why Destroyers can be used in various types of mission, if it is war, escort or peacekeeping operations. Destroyers were first introduced in Russian-Japanese war. Now, Destroyers are Heaviest surface combatants after Cruisers.
Kolkata class or Project 15A are Indian originated Destroyers which comes with guided missile and stealth technology which are currently in service in Indian Navy. Currently Indian Navy is operating 11 destroyers.

Cruisers :-

Cruisers are not used by Indian Navy currently but i think you should also know about them a bit. Cruisers are strongest of all above, but due to high cost it is operated only by US & Russian Navy. Cruisers have great fire power and very long endurance power. The main role of these ship is to protect larger ships like merchant ships and aircraft carriers. But it is also used to destroy destroyers in some cases.
